Matt Lynch | In Review Online | Rotten | — | 13 hrs ago | 2026-10-22 02:23:00 | The thing that ultimately scuttles Whalefall is that it takes itself slightly too seriously, preferring a solemn story of sons grappling with fathers and a heaping dose of trauma metaphor.
Erik Childress | Movie Madness Podcast | Fresh | 3/4 | 1 hr ago | 2026-10-21 13:23:00 | Flaws and all, in a perfect world, people would be going to see this in a theater instead of just another video game adaptation.
Beau Behan | Patch.com | Fresh | — | 4 hrs ago | 2026-10-21 10:23:00 | The film transforms an improbable survival scenario into a meditation on what endures beyond loss, elevating an unlikely premise into something genuinely affecting.
Tara McNamara | Common Sense Media | Fresh | 4/5 | 21 hrs ago | 2026-10-20 17:23:00 | Make sure you have something or someone nearby to clutch while watching, because this mesmerizing modern-day Jonah story is stressful, harrowing, and surprisingly emotional.

It's a great confinement horror. It's a great animal thriller. If you get claustrophobic, if you have daddy issues, if you're an Austin Abrams fan-- there is something for everyone. |

Wendy Ide | Observer (UK) | Fresh | — | 2026-10-15T16:50:17.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:50:17 | The film is so viscerally in your face, you can almost taste the churning cetacean gut juices. But Duffield deftly balances the yuck factor with something more soulful.
Rotem Rusak | Nerdist | Fresh | 4/5 | 2026-10-15T16:49:09.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:49:09 | Do I fully know what to make of it? Not totally. But I enjoyed every minute of it. And long after the credits have rolled, I’m still pondering its many depths.
Kevin Maher | The Times (UK) | Rotten | 2/5 | 2026-10-15T16:48:15.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:48:15 | Though the movie, unlike, say, Gravity, consistently side-steps actual scientific analysis of Jay’s situation, the increasing sense that we’re being served up utter hogwash only underscores the movie’s status as a lazy, bad-faith gesture.
Richard Whittaker | Austin Chronicle | Rotten | 1.5/5 | 2026-10-15T16:45:23.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:45:23 | What gets Whalefall through are some spectacular set pieces and Morton’s spectacular underwater cinematography, but neither can hide that this is the smartest possible version of a truly dumb movie. Quite honestly, both we and the whales deserve better.
Hannah Strong | Little White Lies | Rotten | 2/5 | 2026-10-15T16:44:44.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:44:44 | The tonal mismatch keeps Whalefall way out of ‘unhinged b‑movie’ territory but still swimming far from the warm shore of ‘strangely moving’.
Johnny Oleksinski | New York Post | Rotten | 1.5/4 | 2026-10-15T16:44:11.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:44:11 | Perhaps the answer to every [question] is: Shut up and just enjoy it. However, Whalefall is not a terribly exciting or engaging movie either, despite the enthusiasm of its star on the rise, Abrams.
Ben Kenigsberg | New York Times | Rotten | — | 2026-10-15T16:42:28.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:42:28 | Abrams’s unenviable job requires him to emote in wide-eyed close-ups and enunciate through an oxygen mouthpiece, tasks that few actors could accomplish without looking ridiculous. It’s a challenge that sinks the star.
Benjamin Lee | Guardian | Rotten | 2/5 | 2026-10-15T16:34:55.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:34:55 | The authenticity is applaudable but it’s just one of many decisions that makes it harder to justify and enjoy the stage-to-screen adaptation, our connection to his plight hard to solidify.
Charlie Ridgely | Collider | Fresh | 9/10 | 2026-10-15T16:16:50.000Z | 2026-10-15 16:16:50 | Whalefall is a lot of things: It's terrifying, awe-inspiring, moving, a little sappy, unbelievably earnest, and wholly memorable. Above all, though, Whalefall is confident.
Mario Alegre | Próxima Tanda (Substack) | Fresh | — | 2026-10-15T15:30:20.000Z | 2026-10-15 15:30:20 | Translating the heart of Kraus' novel to the big screen was no easy task, but Duffield finds ways to get most of its suspense, emotion and weirdness across in effective ways.
Richard Crouse | Richard Crouse | Fresh | 2.5/5 | 2026-10-15T14:31:21.000Z | 2026-10-15 14:31:21 | A modern riff on Jonah and the Whale, Whalefall has some genuinely uncomfortably claustrophobic moments but the whale of a tale gets drowned in sentiment in the belly of the beast.
Mark Dujsik | Mark Reviews Movies | Fresh | 3/4 | 2026-10-15T14:00:23.000Z | 2026-10-15 14:00:23 | [T]he film is a biological nightmare from its inciting incident forward.
Calum Cooper | Cinerama Film | Rotten | 2/5 | 2026-10-15T12:09:00.000Z | 2026-10-15 12:09:00 | What we’re left with is a survival story in which the characters are underdeveloped, the themes are routine, and the filmmaking isn’t all that evocative, or even interesting, outside of the incredulity of the premise.
Amelia Emberwing | Pickety Witch | Rotten | — | 2026-10-15T07:52:41.000Z | 2026-10-15 07:52:41 | Whalefall is preposterous, and not because of its silly premise.
Andrew Gaudion | metro.co.uk | Rotten | 2/5 | 2026-10-15T07:01:15.000Z | 2026-10-15 07:01:15 | There are some good moments of claustrophobic terror, but the hackneyed emotional arc both robs the film of a knowing sense of humour and doesn’t provide enough convincing material to feel justified.
Sandra Hall | Sydney Morning Herald | Rotten | 3/5 | 2026-10-15T04:47:57.000Z | 2026-10-15 04:47:57 | There is no doubt that Duffield knows how to put a thriller together and this one is a true original, but by the end, I was even more eager to make my escape than Jay himself.
Sebastian Zavala Kahn | Me gusta el cine | Fresh | 4/5 | 2026-10-15T04:37:25.000Z | 2026-10-15 04:37:25 | It works as a tense and visceral survival story, starring an Austin Abrams who is currently at the top of his game (so far). [Full review in Spanish].
Anthony Morris | It's Better in the Dark | Fresh | 3.5/5 | 2026-10-15T01:42:17.000Z | 2026-10-15 01:42:17 | There are some very effective scenes here, along with some touching moments. There are also a number of scenes that verge on the silly, even if this doesn't gloss over in any way the fact that being eaten alive is not a fun time
Jim Schembri | jimschembri.com | Rotten | 2.5/5 | 2026-10-15T01:30:23.000Z | 2026-10-15 01:30:23 | There's nothing wrong with all the eco-talk about how important whales are - with the story behind the film's title a sweet treat - but things would have worked better without all the internal yapping amidst the whale's squishing intestines.
